Metamucil Weight Loss

Metamucil Weight Loss

Many people are aware that Metamucil can be a useful tool in the struggle to lose weight. The reason this is true is that the active ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium husk. Psyllium husk is a bulking fiber which expands in the intestines and forms a gelatin like mass. This mass serves two purposes.

First, it makes you feel full which, when taken about 30 minutes before meals, causes you to eat less. Thus you are able to lose weight by way of caloric reduction. Secondly the mass grabs and pulls waste stuck to the intestinal walls out with it. This cleansing of the intestines promotes overall health and well being.

Metamucil Vs Whole Psyllium Husks

The problem I have with Metamucil is that the psyllium husk  is ground into a powder which makes it less effective. Whole unprocessed husks are by far the most effective form of  psyllium. Another problem I have with Metamucil is that it contains artificial flavoring. This means you’re introducing an unnecessary and potentially harmful additive to your body.

They reason they grind the husks into a powder and add flavoring to it is to make it easier and more pleasant to drink. Whole husks can be a little difficult for some people to swallow. It is important to drink your psyllium husk with a whole glass of water to prevent choking.

Whole psyllium husk supplements can normally only be purchased in health food stores whereas Metamucil is available in most grocery stores.
