If you haven’t heard of kefir, you’re not alone. It’s surprising to me that so many people are unaware or this extremely healthy drink. Kefir is essentially made from grains implanted in milk that ferment the milk into a yogurt-like drink that’s loaded with probiotics and offers a large variety of health benefits. Kefir is high in protein and vitamins and so it’s a great post-workout drink or a quick and nutritious breakfast. Kefir dates back many centuries to the shepherds of the Caucasus Mountains, many of whom lived to be over 100 years old.
Some Health Benefits of Kefir:
Boosts immune system
Detoxifies the body
Treats stomach disorders Treats constipation
Lowers bad cholesterol
Improves overall health
Kefir has at least 10 live cultures of probiotics. Probiotics are good bacteria that can hep with digestion and help remove harmful bacteria from your body. The amount of probiotics in kefir far exceeds even those in yogurt.
Buy Kefir Grains
You can buy the kefir grains so that you can make kefir at home. It is a very simple process that I have included instructions for below.
How to Make Kefir
1. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of kefir grains in a glass jar with about 2 cups of raw unpasteurized organic milk.
2. Allow it to ferment at room temperature for 12-36 hours (once it starts to look really thick it’s probably done)
3. Pour the kefir through a strainer an into a glass jar. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to gently stir until all of the liquid has passed through the strainer.
4. You will be left with the kefir grains in the strainer. Use those same grains to repeat the process. Do not wash the kefir grains.
Lifeway is a company that makes a variety of kefir drinks that can be purchased at some local grocery stores. This is the second best option if you decide you don’t want to make your own kefir. I have tried most of the Lifeway kefirs and they all taste good and seem to be very fresh. You can visit their site to find out if there are any grocery stores in your area that carry their product.
