What are flax seeds?
Flax seeds are the seeds from the plant Linum usitatissimum and are a rich source both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Flax seed oil has many of the same benefits as fish oil and is a great option for vegetarians or those who don’t want to use fish oil. Flax seed actually has more Omega 3 fats than fish oil, they are just in a different form.
Flax seeds are high in the omega 3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which the body converts into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are the prominent Omega 3’s in fish oil. In additon to the Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, flax seed is high in B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc.
